Unilateral Tinnitus

Have you ever had a constant ringing in your ears? Well that might very well be tinnitus. The sound that you hear might not be exactly a ringing sound; the noise can be perceived as a hissing, cracking or buzzing sound, or a sound of similar nature. There are two different types of tinnitus. There is unilateral tinnitus which means that you only hear the annoying sound in one ear. Then there is bilateral tinnitus which means that you hear the annoying sound in both ears. In any case you will know if you have tinnitus as the sound is pretty annoying and plus that you will be the only one who will hear the annoying noise.

There are many conditions that can cause unilateral tinnitus. Some conditions aren't so bad while others are more severe. Something as simple as ear wax can cause a mild case of unilateral tinnitus. In some extreme cases, the underlying cause of tinnitus might be a severe ear infection. But there are several other causes apart from these two.

There are some things that people don't really think about that could very well be the cause of unilateral tinnitus. For instance, the underlying cause could be stress or some other psychological related condition. It's weird what stress can do to a person and ear ringing is one of these things. Another cause that might cause this condition is high blood pressure, so in this case it is essential not to consume too much salt whilst checking your blood pressure at regular intervals.

Another condition that can cause unilateral tinnitus is the exposure to loud sounds for an extended period of time. Being exposed to loud sounds puts a lot of pressure on the ears and in the long run this might cause tinnitus. This also includes exposure to loud music. Unfortunately many are those who do not know that that loud music can cause extreme pressure on the ears, which in turn might cause ear ringing problems.

If you have unilateral tinnitus it is important to treat the problem as early as possible. Some people have actually lost their hearing since they ignored their ear ringing problem whilst continuing to expose themselves to the cause of the problem (like load noises), without doing anything about it (like wearing ear plugs). If the underlying cause of your problem is ear wax then you can try a home remedy to flush out the wax in your ear. However it is best to seek the opinion of a doctor or other professional as you don't want to mess with your ear, which is a very delicate organ in itself. Only a professional can clean your ear thoroughly and only he/she can tell you exactly what needs to be done in order to take care of your ear condition. After cleaning your ear of wax the professional might then prescribe ear drops in case the ear in infected.

Sometimes, curing your unilateral tinnitus is a matter of cutting things in your diet. These include salt, which we already mentioned and also caffeine. Other times, it's just a matter of cutting the stress and learning to relax and control oneself. In other cases it is just a question of turning down the music, especially when earphones are used. As in the above cases, the cure might be pretty simple however some people still refuse to reduce salt levels or to hear music at a low volume, even though they might know that they are harming themselves.

If you have unilateral tinnitus then you should not fear. The condition might not be serious and curing your condition might be just a case of slightly changing your lifestyle. However you should always play it safe and never leave your condition to get worse before paying a visit to the doctor or other professional person. Remember, if the problem is in one ear, it doesn't necessarily mean that nothing is wrong or that you can continue to count on the other ear. Your body is sending you signals to warn you that something is wrong with your ear, so better take care of the problem before both ears become affected.
