Ringing Of The Ears

Ringing of the ears, also known as tinnitus is the ringing, buzzing, crackling, or hissing sound heard inside one or both ears. Ear ringing can arise in any of the four sections of the ear: the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, and the brain. Tinnitus is often accompanied by hearing loss. Tinnitus is a result of the brain attempting to "rewire" itself when the ear has become damaged, resulting in a ringing noise. Sufferers of tinnitus can experience a wide range of noise creating a minor annoyance to debilitating pain depending on its severity. Ear ringing is most common in people older than age 40. Men have problems with tinnitus more often than women.

Ringing of the ears is a not a disease in itself but rather a symptom, usually of another condition. Tinnitus is not considered life threatening, but it affects nearly 50 million people in the United States, 1 to 2 million of them so severely that they cannot lead normal lives. Even at its worst, however, there are a number of home remedies a person can take to make the situation more bearable.

There are two main types of ear ringing: pulsative tinnitus and nonpulsative tinnitus. Pulsative tinnitus is often caused by sounds created by muscle movements near the ear, changes in the ear canal, or blood flow (vascular) problems in the face or neck. You may hear sounds such as your own pulse or the contractions of your muscles. Nonpulsatile tinnitus is caused by problems in the nerves involved with hearing. You may hear sounds in one or both ears. Sometimes this type of tinnitus is described as coming from inside the head.

People with chronic ringing of the ears quite often become depressed and have anxiety and insomnia. These three conditions alone can be enough to drive a person over the edge. Add to these terrible experiences a serious inability to concentrate and it's easy to see why tinnitus sufferers are searching for answers. Finding the best treatment for ringing of the ears may take time. Tinnitus is an individual experience and what works for one person may not work for another person. When considering ear ringing treatments, it's probably best to initially be thoroughly examined by specialists in an attempt to uncover the source of the tinnitus.
